In her series Desert Ghosts, Marina Arias takes inspiration from the arid landscapes of the Puna de Atacama, where images seem to emerge and fade at once. Salt flats mirror the sky, mineral flashes suggest what has vanished, and still surfaces reveal origins in tectonic clashes and volcanic eruptions. The works capture this tension, evoking traces of what once was — mirage-like forms that disappear even as they insist on remaining.

Arias translates this spectral quality into her process, allowing pigments to seep into raw fabric like mineral veins and expand into textured layers recalling salt crusts and volcanic sediments. Broken lines echo fractures of the earth’s crust, while her neutral palette is punctuated by bursts of color, like hidden minerals catching the desert light. Desert Ghosts becomes both landscape and inner journey, meditating on fragility, endurance, and transformation in one of the world’s most extreme terrains.
