Cheryl Humphreys’ Prism Studies series is an evolving exploration of color as emotional reflection. What began with cool blues and greens—created in winter’s stillness and in the aftermath of local fires—has since blossomed into warmer tones of pink, purple, and yellow, mirroring the rise of spring and a shift in spirit. As her technique becomes more instinctive, the works take on a mood ring–like quality, responding to personal and seasonal rhythms. The newest pieces, described as “ghosts,” are softer and more textured, carrying the quiet imprint of what came before—evidence of process, memory, and renewal.
In Humphreys’ words:
The prism studies (Prisms) have grown into my largest series to date. As the technical becomes habitual, I am able to tune into the color mixing in a more intuitive way. The process has taken on a mood ring effect – reflective of personal experience – a response to the now: seasonal and cyclical. The blues and greens that started the series were quenching a thirst, created in the depths of winter and directly after the fires. This next set, consisting of pinks, a purple and a bright yellow were made during the rise of spring – pink petals, warm sunshine, an opening of flowers and spirit.
The ghosts are brighter, softer and more textured than the initial floods of color. They have history already… proof of something preliminary.
