In her new series of exquisite abstract works, Satsuki Shibuya considers portals into the mind, the heart, and every facet of our lives. Across each work, the artist compels us to understand that whether we realize it or not, we transit between existence and passing, in slumber and wakefulness, through different dimensions of consciousness. Through this transit, portals open us to see life, death, and beyond — marking moments of glory or pain with not one experience trumping the other. This allows us to birth our wisdom and the depth of knowledge that connects us to our past, present, and future.

Whether we realize it or not,
we transit between existence and passing,
in slumber and wakefulness,
through different dimensions of consciousness.
Portals open us to see life, death, and beyond,
marking moments of glory or pain,
with no one experience trumping another,
allowing the birth of our wisdom,
the depth of knowledge,
that we may otherwise not impart,
to come through and flourish,
connecting us to our past, present, and future.
