In his latest body of work, Michael Harnish approaches painting as a vital mode of thinking and discovery—one that resists algorithmic patterns and keeps imagination open. Through an intense process of exploring and revising shapes, patterns, and visual relationships, he treats the canvas as a site of continual problem-solving and improvisation. Rather than carefully planning images in advance, Harnish embraces uncertainty, allowing chance, revision, and even “mistakes” from earlier layers to actively shape the work. Painting over prior compositions becomes both a challenge and a catalyst, keeping his attention sharp and his practice dynamic.

Across the series, Harnish returns to motifs of flowers, fauna, and landscape as grounding touchstones in an increasingly digital world.
