Description
Deep Ecology is a series of works on paper by Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck initiated in 2015 that gently reflects on the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of environmental awareness. Drawing on the philosophical framework of deep ecology, the series combines Hoffbeck’s sensitivity to color, form, and material with a meditative approach to mark-making. Through quiet compositions and natural palettes and titles extracted from Arne Næss’ writing, these works invite viewers to consider their place within the broader ecosystem, encouraging empathy, attentiveness, and care for the more-than-human world. All artworks are created using plant-based oil pigment, natural pigments, and layered paper sheets, carefully selected by Hoffbeck during her visit to paper artisans. Some works also feature handmade paper created by the artist.
